If this year has meant canceled or postponed travel plans, you’re certainly not alone! We saw our family summer plans for London and Greece sail on by too. We had asked our eldest daughter who will be a Senior in High School next year, and thus spending her last full summer with us – to pick a European destination that we could combine with a family milestone birthday in London. It was no surprise that my ocean and beach loving girl picked Greece. It was the perfect choice for us. I find with kids and teens, the winning recipe is usually combining culture and sightseeing (often at high heat with floundering troops), with ice cream, adventure and swimming at beautiful beaches or hidden coves or in the case of teen girls – finding perfectly Instagrammable photo stops. (preferably with ice cream).
Despite canceled plans, I hope you’re all healthy and well and found ways to enjoy special time with family and friends during this unusual, unpredictable summer. Whether you boarded flights (whilst squeezing in COVID tests for the family, in between packing the bags and checking passports you brave things!) or embarked on a fun, beautiful US road trips or explored your own local areas – it was a summer where we all did what felt right, and comfortable. For us, it has been a great reason to really explore our magnificent state of New York where we live. Growing up in South Africa, I never would’ve believed the great Adirondack Wilderness, glorious unspoiled Atlantic beaches or historic, artsy Hudson Valley to be the New York I’d always imagined! It is vast, magnificent and packed with natural and cultural treasures! And goes way beyond the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge of the NY Romantic Comedies screened on our one single channel of my South African youth.
So – all this talk of travel makes way for my special announcement that my travel company ‘Journeys by Soldi’ – previously specializing in African Safaris – is going BEYOND Africa, as in worldwide! The wild spaces and safaris of Africa will always have my heart—but my love of immersive travel worldwide, and sharing my experiences, naturally led to this next step.

You might think that this is a crazy time to expand my travel business beyond Africa, with all that has been happening in the world, and still is. However, this was a dream in the making and a plan put into action, long before the COVID-19 outbreak. Although, a worldwide pandemic was not one of the things I thought I’d be dealing with!
My first focus during these last few months was to get several wonderful African safaris re-booked for 2021. A big disappointment for my clients and friends, but I am so glad we were able to take care of all the details and that they still have their amazing African adventures to look forward to!
I truly believe in the return of travel – it makes our lives richer, no matter where we go. The tourism industry can be such an incredible force for good, supporting countless communities, jobs and conservation efforts worldwide, whilst forging human connections across borders.
I’m taking this pandemic seriously, and respect that we all have different comfort levels. We will travel again. For now, we’re doing what’s right for our global community by heeding travel advisories and acting responsibly. When the time is right (and I cannot wait for that day!) we’ll be sipping African sundowners again or sailing along the Mediterranean coast and venturing to the many corners of the world that continue to inspire us.
